Dimmu Borgir is a melodic black metal band hailing from Norway. Shagrath, Silenoz and Tjodalv initiated the band in 1993. Shortly after, Brynjard Tristan joined to play bass, and Stian Aarstad joined for keyboard duties. Dimmu Borgir was born. They are a band which success is measured with such bands as Emperor, Kreator and Cradle of Filth. I will without a doubt say that Dimmu Borgir is the best black metal band in the world today (webmaster's comment).
Haunting keyboard melodies, aggressive guitar work, destructive drums, grim/raw vocals and a touch of melodic/operatic vocals characterize Dimmu Borgir's sound. They are musically inspired by 80's black metal and heavy metal. Classic composers, like Wagner and Dvorak, also inspire them.

Iron Maiden

Formed in London, England, in 1976, Iron Maiden was from the start the brainchild of Steve Harris (b. 12 March 1957, Leytonstone, London, England; bass), formerly a member of pub rockers Smiler. Named after a medieval torture device, the music was suitably heavy and hard on the senses. The heavy metal scene of the late 70s was widely regarded as stagnant, with only a handful of bands proving their ability to survive and produce music of quality. It was at this time that a new breed of young British bands began to emerge. This movement, which began to break cover in 1979 and 1980, was known as the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, or NWOBHM. Iron Maiden was one of the foremost bands in the genre, and many would say its definitive example. Younger and meaner, the NWOBHM bands dealt in faster, more energetic heavy metal than any of their forefathers (punk being an obvious influence).

Ill Niño

The members of New Jersey Latin metal band Ill Niño hate flying, but they've spent a good amount of the last eight years squeezed into airplane seats. The six piece band, comprised of Christian Machado (vocals), Dave Chavarri (drums), Lazaro "Laz" Pina (bass), Ahrue Luster (guitars), Danny Couto (percussion) and Diego Verduzco (guitars), has brought their chunky and sometimes funky heaviness to devoted fans in Japan, México, Puerto Rico, England, Ireland, Hungry, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania.

Formed in 1999, Ill Niño quickly signed to influential metal label Roadrunner Records and released three studio albums of clever, bilingual nu-metal: 2001's Revolution Revolución, 2003's Confession, and 2005's One Nation Underground. Lyrically and rhythmically, the band has a genuine South American influence – Machado, Couto and Pina all have Brazilian roots while drummer Chavarri hails from Perú. On tracks like How Can I Live, What Comes Around and Arrastra, the group effectively combines syncopation with the aggressive bent of Soulfly and the melodic sensibility of Deftones.

After selling nearly a million albums worldwide – no small feat for metal, which rarely gets radio or television play these days – Ill Niño parted ways with Roadrunner and signed to Cement Shoes Records. The band's next release, Enigma, is due at the start of next year. Let the touring begin.

Children of Bodom

Children of Bodom is a metal band from Espoo, Finland. There is some contention regarding the band's genre classification, but in general the band's musical style can be described as a hybrid of black metal, power metal, and melodic death metal. Children of Bodom are releasing a new album in October and are doing extensive world touring, including such rarely-visited places such as Australia, New Zealand and Africa.

The band's earlier releases leaned more towards a power metal style, but recently the band has focused on a style more closely related to melodic death metal. However, several key traits have remained consistent throughout the band's history, such as a focus on rapid tempos and technical guitar and keyboard solos. Other traits, such as Alexi's vocal approach and Jaska's use of blast beats are also consistent across the band's discography. The lyrics of Children of Bodom's songs are written in English and most often are concerned with the subjects of death/The grim reaper, personal struggles, war and the Lake Bodom murders. Recent albums have seen a shift to more antagonistic lyrics (songs such as "You´re Better Off Dead" and "In Your Face") that has alienated some older fans.

Chthonic

A rock band with a face-paint obsession may not seem like the most likely candidate to advocate United Nations membership for Taiwan, which China considers a renegade province. But on their current North American tour "UNlimited" -- which included several shows at Ozzfest -- the members of Chthonic mix the righteous rage of metal with a message of empowerment for their home country.

"Metal fans understand the idea of justice," says vocalist Freddy Lim, who writes songs about the UN situation as well as Taiwanese legends and myths. "Before I sing [tour theme song] 'UNlimited Taiwan,' I always talk a little bit about Taiwan and the United Nations, but always in heavy metal language with a lot of cursing. It's not a very logical dialogue; it's a simple language, just to make the fans get interested."
